Dining Out? Make Healthy Choices
Eating healthy is easy… if you have willpower, motivation and a meticulously planned grocery list. But what about all those unplanned lunch meetings, dinner dates and company parties? Well, as a retired bartender and server, I am here to tell you there are ways to eat healthy when you're at a restaurant!
First of all, skip the fats. What you may not realize is restaurants cook EVERYTHING in butter and oil, even vegetables. Keep in mind, however, that there is a reason restaurant cooks are called 'line cooks' – they literally line up and each becomes responsible for a different portion of the dish. With that many people in the kitchen (not to mention that not one of those people actually took your order), a lot gets lost in translation. So, even when you think you're being healthy and ordering something without butter, odds are that small detail was either never communicated to the cooks by your server or it was all lost in communication by a whole team of people that are running around preparing dishes for 50 other people. Next time, try telling your server you have a food allergy or intolerance and cannot have any of your food cooked in butter or oil. This way, the server will make it a point to ensure that the food is cooked exactly the way you asked for it.
According to USA Today, restaurant portions can be 60% larger than the average meal cooked at home, and can be anywhere from two to four times larger than a standard portion size. Though your server may try to persuade you otherwise, you can choose to pass on any side that may come with your meal, you're not obligated to eat the whole dish in one sitting and you're not required to take home your leftovers. Order water with lemon before and during your meal to help fill you up, and turn down any bread the restaurant may offer for the table. If you try even one of these simple changes, you will save hundreds of calories on your next meal out!
