When applying sunscreen, don’t forget those easily forgotten areas like your hands, feet and back of the neck!
Juvederm ™ is an anti-aging dermal filler that offers a non-surgical approach to smoothing out facial wrinkles, folds and deep creases. This gel-based injection provides a high concentration of cross-linked hyaluronic acid for lasting results. In the human body, natural hyaluronic acid provides volume and fullness to the skin. Juvederm™ incorporates a form of this natural agent that flows into the skin during the injection process for a smooth and natural look.
Juvederm™ is available in two formulations: Juvederm™ Ultra for versatility in contouring and volumizing facial wrinkles and folds, and Juvederm™ Ultra Plus, a more robust formulation for volumizing and correcting deeper folds and wrinkles. This allows the healthcare professional to tailor treatments to meet the specific needs of the client. Juvederm™ injectable gel is also the first FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler that is proven to be safe and effective for skin of color.
DESCRIPTION OF TREATMENT
During a Juvederm™ treatment, the area to be injected will be cleansed, usually with alcohol swabs, and no anesthetic is necessary. Clients can request a topical anesthetic cream for comfort. The physician may request that specific expressions be made to identify facial muscle contractions and mark near the injection sites with temporary ink. A series of injections are then administered under the skin using a fine needle to augment, or fill, the soft tissue of the dermis to add volume and diminish wrinkles and folds on the surface of the skin.
A typical Juvederm™ treatment takes approximately 10-15 minutes, and clients usually return to normal activities directly after the injections. No allergy skin tests are required.
Side effects associated with Juvederm™ are usually mild to moderate, and include temporary injection site reactions like redness, pain, firmness, swelling and bumps. These effects generally last 7 days, or less. As with any type of injection, there is always a risk of infection. These issues, and any other safety concerns should be discussed with a well-trained and qualified provider.
Juvederm™ was FDA approved in 2004.
Be sure to research and only use a certified provider, physician or RN that is trained and experienced in Juvederm™ injections. It is recommended that clients consult with a family physician prior to any sort of medical aesthetic treatment. Juvederm™ should not be used where severe allergies marked by a history of anaphylaxis are present, or if there is a presence of multiple severe allergies, as well as a history of allergies to gram-positive bacterial proteins.
The safety and effectiveness of Juvederm™ for the treatment of areas other than facial wrinkles and folds (such as lips) have not been established in controlled clinical studies. According to Allegern, the manufacturers of Juvederm™, each client and provider should discuss the following important treatment considerations in order to help avoid unsatisfactory results and complications:
Clients who are using substances that can prolong bleeding, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, as with any injection treatment, may experience increased bruising or bleeding at the injection site. Inform the healthcare professional before treatment if using these types of substances.
If laser treatment, chemical peeling or any other procedure based on active dermal response is considered after treatment with Juvederm™, there is a possible risk of an inflammatory reaction at the treatment site.
Juvederm™ should be used with caution in patients on immunosuppressive therapy, or therapy used to decrease the body's immune response, as there may be an increased risk of infection.
The safety of Juvederm™ for use during pregnancy, in breastfeeding females, or in patients under 18 years has not been established.
The safety of Juvederm™ in patients with a history of excessive scarring (eg, hypertrophic scarring and keloid formations) and pigmentation disorders has not been studied.
The average cost of Juvederm™ can range from $600-$1000 per individual treatment. These prices are greatly affected by the location of the provider and the area, or areas being treated.
